Polka dot baby shower
Planning a polka dot baby shower
There are so many cute baby shower theme options, and polka dot baby shower theme is definitely one of the most popular ones. Pink, brown, white polka dots for girls, blue, green, yellow polka dots for boys, gender neutral bright colored polka dots - just when you think you have picked out a theme, you are facing a new dilemma - what colors should I go with? The regular boy/ girl colors or more unique color combinations like white, grey, and orange? Before you send out baby shower invitations, it's a good idea to make sure you can find tableware and decorations with similar print.
A friend and I are planning a baby shower for a good friend of ours. The Mom-to-be made our job somewhat easier by requesting pink and brown polka dot theme. But what we are finding out now is that it's a little difficult to match the hues on the baby shower invitations we sent out earlier. A little difficult, but very doable. I personally love planning parties, and planning the baby shower has been a fun experience and a perfect opportunity to get creative. There are so many great polka dot baby shower ideas on the web and on Pinterest - I had to start a "Polka dot baby shower" Pinterest board to keep track of my favorite ones.

Polka dot baby shower essentials - Plates, napkins, tablecloth
As I have mentioned earlier, the theme for the baby shower we are planning is pink and brown polka dots, so most of the baby shower ideas you will find here will be in pink and brown hues. If your baby shower theme colors are different, you can find similar items in a different color by clicking on the link below and then doing a search for the item in blue, green, orange, red, black, or any other color.
Also, if you are on a tight budget, you may want to consider picking up some of these items at a Dollar store. You may not find polka dot tableware, but you may be able to pick up solid colored tablecloth, napkins, plates, cups, and cutlery in the colors of your choice. The savings may be pretty substantial, and you can use some of your tableware budget towards polka dotted decorations, like balloons, table runner, paper lanterns, etc.
Polka dot baby shower decorations - Lanterns and pom poms
With polka dot lanterns, you can instantly add a festive touch to any room in a matter of minutes. You may also want to consider plain colored lanterns and pom poms for your baby shower decorations. If you are interested in trying to make your own paper lanterns, click on the chocolate brown bulk tissue paper link below - it has the instructions for making paper lanterns in the product description.
Polka dot garland
Garlands are frequently used as baby shower decorations. You can either purchase a polka dot garland online or make your own. To make a banner of flags, you will need polka dotted cardstock and ribbon (be sure to click on the "banner of flags link for instructions from Martha Stewart). For a hanging dots garland, use circle punch to cut out dots out of cardstock and then sew them together or glue them onto a ribbon or twine.

DIY polka dot garland instructions
I made the small polka dot garland, using twine cord and free digital scrapbooking paper I found at this awesome blog. Fun and very easy project. First, decide on the size of the flags, then cut out rectangles that are double the length of the flag. Cut out a small triangle at the bottom. Once all the flag garland pieces are cut out, glue them on to a ribbon or twine - I used Elmer's glue sticks. This little flags can also be glued on to toothpicks for cute appetizer or cupcake decorations.
We also used the printed paper for paper rings to secure napkins wrapped around silverware. You can see the paper rings in the image featured below:

Polka dot balloons for a polka dot baby shower
I think polka dot balloons are super cute and a must have for a polka dot baby shower. You can make a balloon garland or tie them to furniture, ceiling fan, or a curtain rod. Or use helium to inflate the balloons and attach balloon weights for nice table centerpieces or stand alone balloon decorations. If a helium balloon kit is not in your budget, check with your local stores - they will often inflate balloons for you for a small charge.

Polka dot homemade dessert ideas
If you are making your own cupcakes, be sure to pick up cupcake liners or wrappers. I would suggest that you bake cupcakes and then transfer them into decorative cupcake liners or pick up darker colored/ grease proof cupcake liners. Instead of using polka dot liners, you can use regular solid colored liners and then decorate cupcakes with pearlized sprinkles or chocolate morsels (white or dark chocolate) turned upside down. You can also color cupcake icing to match the colors of your theme with Wilton color icing, using these instructions: how to color icing. Wilton Dessert decorator plus may come handy if you are decorating cupcakes or cake. It includes round tip for making dots and beads (polka dots), as wells as 4 other decorating tips.
Cupcake stands, cake platters, and dessert carrier
For the baby shower we are planning, we are going with cupcakes for dessert. We will be making cupcakes at home and then transporting them to the baby shower location, so we have to remember to bring a cupcake stand and find a few cupcake carriers. If you are serving cake, don't forget cake serving utensils and cake plates!
Cute polka dot baby shower decorations
Here are a few more ideas to make a baby shower more festive. We bought some clear vases for the baby shower we are planning. We will decorate the vases with brown polka dot ribbon to tie them into the baby shower theme and will fill the vases with pink fresh cut flowers. You can also fill clear jars with bubble gum or candy in the colors of your choice or make a pinwheel display. Click on the link below to view my Polka Dot Baby Shower Pinterest board.
Polka dot washi tape
Polka dot washi tape has become a very popular decorating media. You can use it to make toothpick flags, decorate candles and glass vases, clothpins, and so much more! Be sure to check out to follow the link to my Washi Tape Crafts Pinterest Board you will find below.
