Red Room Decorating Ideas

Updated on August 31, 2017

Red Room Decor

Red is one of my favorite colors. Red room decor? Yes, please! Although a combination of red walls, red furniture, red carpet, red wall fixtures, and red wall art would be too much for me, I think that red accents add a nice touch to a living room, bedroom, dining room, or a kitchen. Red color goes well with white, vanilla, natural, grey, and black - the neutral colors offset the rich red and make living spaces more inviting. Also, if you like combinations of brighter colors, consider the combination of red and turquoise. In this article, I will share my red room decorating ideas along with links to blogs that will give you the inspiration to put the red room decor elements together.

A Red room or a room with a red accent wall?

If you are moving into a new home or redesigning a room from scratch, you may find yourself contemplating using red paint for your living room, dining room, or kitchen. Experts often advise against using red paint in a bedroom due to the effects it may have on a human body - red is an energizing color that may cause an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, elevate aggression, sometimes cause headaches and difficulty focusing. If you do decide to use red paint in your bedroom, consider painting just one wall, behind your bed headboard, like this accent wall. A red accent wall may also be a good option for your living room if you are concerned about getting tired of too much red in your house. Before you start painting the accent wall, be sure to check out TLC's guide to painting an accent wall and how to paint a room red guide on WikiHow. As for a red kitchen or dining room, psychologists would tell you that red has shown to increase appetite, so it's perfectly fine to paint a kitchen or a dining room red, or go with a red accent wall.

Red accents for your Wall - Add a whimsical touch to any room with these decals, art posters, and metal art wall decor.

The black decal featured here is also available in red and burgundy and you can buy a regular or reversed version, depending on which corner you are planning to decorate. A framed art print or a handmade oil painting will make a great addition to a room with red accents. Artwork should complement the furniture in the room. Also, it's a good idea to use a theme to tie all room decor elements together.

Area Rugs with red accents

Area rugs with red, brick red, and burgundy accents complement red living room decor. It may be a good idea to start with the carpet and then match furniture, curtains, and room decor to match the hues of the carpet.

Red Room Furniture

I love the look of red furniture but prefer either neutral or dark leather couches and natural wood or neutral colored furniture to go with red room decor elements - red pillows, red curtains, red carpet, and other red room design essentials. But it really is a matter of taste, and if a red couch, chair, or cabinet is on your shopping list, consider the furniture picks below. Be sure to also check out Red room decorating ideas section of this blog for ideas on how to tie red decor room elements together - you will find some good links to very well designed living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms with red decor.

Red Room Decorating Ideas - Red Decorative Toss Pillows

Throw (or toss) pillows add a nice decorative touch to a living room or a bedroom. Pillow covers can be switched out a couple times a year to give your house a slightly different look and feel in an instant. If you are looking for a few basic red room decor elements, tossing a few pillows on a couch, bed, or chair is definitely one of the easiest ways to add red accents to a room.

Red Bedding for your red themed bedroom

Once you have decided on the wall color of your bedroom and have painted the walls, it's time to bring in the other elements of red room decor. Since bed will be the main focus point of your bedroom, my suggestion is to start with red bedding, then add curtains to match the bedding hues.

Red Curtains for you living room, dining room, or bedroom

I have purchased several sets of curtains from Amazon, and they are yet to disappoint me. The curtains I could find locally were way overpriced, and the selection was pretty poor, to say the least. For our dining room, I was looking for shorter curtains - 63 inches in length. I decided to go with the Stylemaster Tribeca faux silk panels featured below. They are excellent quality and provide plenty of privacy, without making the room look too dark when the curtains are closed during the day. Be sure to read the description carefully - some listings are for a set of two panels, and others - for single panel only.

If you are a crafty person, you can also upcycle an old piece of furniture and paint it red. Here is a guide to painting wood cabinets.

Kitchen with red decor and appliances

If your house has an open floor plan, and your kitchen is open to living room and dining room areas, it's important to keep decor somewhat uniform. Therefore, if you are planning on decorating using red decor for your living or dining room, be sure to include a few red decor accents and red appliances in your kitchen. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
